A close friend began to tell me an incident that occurred to him in a swimming pool. His friends and he had decided to go to the local neighborhood pool to cool down. Not being a very good swimmer, he decided to stay on the shallow side of the pool; however, the slide, which many of his friends were enjoying, was located on the deeper side of the pool. My friend figured that he would join his friends who would probably help him if he got into trouble or if not the four life guards who were on duty would help him. Well, my friend decided to go down the slide into 7 feet of water and before he knew it, he was drowning. As he gasped for air he decided to scream and wave his hand hoping that someone would notice. Unfortunately, to his surprise, no one noticed, not even the lifeguards, that he was in trouble. He kept splashing and eventually was able to hold on to a dividing rope that laid across the pool and was very shaken. All he could say, I was in a pool full of people with four lifeguards and no one notice that I was drowning.
I began to think about my friend’s experience and wondered how many folks are calling out for help in our society and no one hears their cries. They are alone in a crowd because our ears have become deaf to the cry of mercy. As I begin to make connections with scripture, I notice that Jesus responded to the call of the helpless and sick. His ears were never numb to the needy and neither should ours. Has society become deaf to calls of mercy what’s your opinion?
